Locomotive Sound Decoder Samples

This page contains sound samples from locomotives equipped with after-market sound decoders from the major manufacturers. The same speaker and enclosure was used for each decoder used within the locomotive type.

The locomotives were started from an idle, run up to about 2/3 of full speed, then back slowly back down to an idle. Next, they were run up a notch and back to idle. A horn is blown at least twice in each file. However, it is just for reference. Horn sound clips for every horn available for all three decoders will be added to this page in the near future.

All sound samples are near the same volume but please adjust volume as necessary to hear sounds.

Future - All Decoder Diesel horns will be added in the near future. Steam decoders later this year.

EMD 567 Sound

GE FDL16 Sound
An Enhanced Base Speaker, 40 mm x 18.5 mm, was mounted in the shell for these samples. This speaker and enclosure produces better sound than the tank mounted speaker and eliminates the problem of metal debris being picked up by the speaker. Click here to see a typical install.

There are two QSI sound files. One is the normal GE sound that is not a high base sound file. The second file is the XB EMD file with Dash 8 notching. We think this makes a pretty nice GE FDL16 so we added it also. You can order the GE sounds either way on the QSI decoder page.

The LokSound FDL-16 file is new and one customized by us. Order from the LokSound Ulrich Custom Sounds
